Epoxy flooring is the process of applying layers of epoxy resin on a floor's surface, usually up to 2 mm thick. There are two definitions of the process, one from the manufacturers of the product and that of the contractors who apply them. The reason for the differing schools of thought lay in the manufacturer's instructions and the manner in which the contractors use the product and their experiences with it.

How Does It Work?

Coating a floor requires four steps, preparation of the surface to be floored, priming, coating and sealing. If properly applied, it is completely hygienic and non slippery surface even when it is wet.

It lays well on many types of surfaces like metal, concrete, tile and wood and is resistant to most harsh chemicals making for a durable and long-lasting surface and some color may even be added to the epoxy for a bit of flare. Although widely used commercially, it also appeals to homeowners for its easy maintenance and durability, it is not uncommon for someone to have it laid in their garage, basement or laundry room.

Types

There are a few types, self-dispersing, which is used for areas with forklifts and other heavy machinery that is operated typically in a warehouse setting. Self-dispersing with quartz sand is used is used in food processing plants because it creates a non slip surface. Places like diners and storage facilities use self leveling kind because of its ease of maintenance. Mortar flooring is used in heavy duty industries. The list goes on and on, you have decorative epoxy, functional epoxy and there's even anti-static epoxy that is used in hospitals and labs!

Costs

Epoxy flooring is not inexpensive and the cost of a floor depends on the size of the surface to be covered, naturally. Of course the expense of this type of flooring is justified by its durability because once it's been laid it will last a life time. Epoxy flooring is usually done by a contractor if it is a commercial job, but there are many different kits out there that homeowners can buy to epoxy their basements and garages. Some of the kits come with flakes to add to or scatter over the epoxy once it's been applied. They come in all different colors so matching isn't a problem and you'll get the same long lasting durability that commercial industries get.
